I am David Allen, poet and freelance writer.

I am retired from a 36-year as a journalist for newspapers in Virginia, Indiana and the Far East, spending the last 19 years running the Guam and Okinawa, Japan, news bureaus for Stars and Stripes, the daily newspaper for the American military community overseas.

All I ever did well was write. Besides reporting, I have had poems published in various small press magazines and websites. In the 1970s I was part of a group of poets in the Washington, D.C. area that published “Old Friends,” a short-lived magazine. On Okinawa I was a featured poet with the Eatwrite Cafe and Traveling Poets Society. We met regularly for open-mic nights at various bars along Gate Two Street, just outside the sprawling Kadena Air Base, and edited a now-defunct E-zine. These days I meet with the good “Last Stanza” folks in Central Indiana.

I am also the Poetry Editor of an online literary magazine, Indiana Voice Journal, and vice president of the Poetry Society of Indiana.

Anyway, finally, after all these years, I am the master of my own domain.

Pleasure to meet you. Sorry it took me so long to get back here to check out your site, but with Military Appreciation Month, things have been pretty hectic!

  2. Hello, David.
Serendipity? My novel about ghosts on the battlefield of Okinawa (“Escarpment”) will be published early next month. http://www.blackrosewriting.com/historical-fiction/escarpment I need to put something on the dedication page so started to browse poetry about the Okinawa conflict. And came across your site. If you would like to read my book, I would be honored to send you a copy, if I can have a mailing address.
    Regards
